Financials

The number of medical journal reports on fibromyalgia is growing, but the focus is headed in the wrong direction. Patients don’t need more hyped-up studies about the marvels of exercise and behavioral therapies. Instead, they need (and deserve) more investigations that favorably impact their care. This is why more than 90 percent of our expenditures go to fund research and it’s reflected in AFSA’s financial summary.

Fibromyalgia research must be redirected toward patient needs, such as improved treatments, diagnostic markers, and a better understanding of what causes this disease. That’s why AFSA’s research-funding program is essential for steering studies in the direction of patient-relevant projects. Although the National Institutes of Health funds research, learn why you can’t count on it for improving your care.

In 2024, AFSA funded three exciting new research projects. Then in 2025, we funded three more. See our Projects Funded section for details. And for those interested, we already solicited researchers to submit their applications in 2026 (see Grant Guidelines).

While the six ongoing studies reduces our cash reserves, we are working to raise funds to award multiple grants each year. Below are graphs of AFSA’s asset balances and financial summaries for the past three years. However, keep in mind that our fiscal year is from July 1st through June 30th. So, two projects were funded in fiscal year 2023 and two more were funded in fiscal year 2024. But we also awarded two more research studies in August of 2025, which do not appear on graphs.

AFSA’s IRS Form 990 (financial statements) for the last three fiscal years are available below as PDFs. In addition, our Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, IRS Determination Letters (initial and 5-year approval), Conflict of Interest Policy, and other governing policies are available.
